Course Prerequisites: 1 year of Sand & Finish experience OR attendance at Basic Sand & Finish School

Course Description: A 3-day in-person intermediate level course for those with wood flooring experience. Includes in-depth training on general equipment maintenance, sanding multiple flooring types/species, unfinished/factoryfinished, engineered/multidirectional/parquet flooring. Also includes floor flattening methods, minimizing the scratch patterns and efficient use of the professional sanding equipment. On the finishing side, the attendee will learn about and practice with stain application, sealers, natural oils, waxes, colorants, reactive conditioners, finish application, scraping, recoats and final coat application, repairs, and board replacement.

Certification Prerequisites: 

  • Be a member of the NWFA in good standing.
  • Have 3 years of experience with sanding and finishing hardwood floors; OR 1 year on-the-job sand & finish experience and attendance at qualifying classes*; OR completion of Wood Floor Specialist apprenticeship
  • Attend 3-day NWFA Sand & Finish Training
  • Complete the NWFA University (NWFAU) Online Sand & Finish Track OR completion of online written exam
  • Complete Hands-On Testing on the day following training event, demonstrating skills in 4 areas:
    • Rough sanding unfinished strip flooring.
    • Finish sanding and applying stain coat.
    • Apply seal coat.
    • Prepare and final coat a prefinished or previously finished strip floor.
  • Sign Certified Sand & Finisher Code of Conduct.

NWFA Certification Testing (Additional $400 charge): Will be available on Friday, March 29, 2024.
